Fun Aunt Megan

I decided to poach this post from my sister's blog because I love the pictures she took of my sweet baby, and I also cannot believe how much fun she packed into just two hours with Clara. What a great birthday gift. Thanks, Megan!

And now, in Megan's own words:

So for my sister's birthday, I volunteered to watch the Lovely Clara while my mom and Rachel went to Sundance for lunch. I'll be honest, I was a little nervous that Clara would not be convinced that Aunt Megan is tons of fun and would take good care of her. As it was, there were only a few anxious utterances of "Momma!" and a whole lot of fun to be had.

First we took a walk around campus, since Clara loves her stroller, and she was particularly pleased with the fountain in the courtyard of the JFSB. When she got tired of that, we went to the Bean Life Science Museum. She loved the animals: she meowed at the cats (cougars, leopards, etc.) cawed at the birds, and quacked at the ducks. I think she thought something was odd about all these animals, since they all stayed perfectly still. She got over it though when she saw the lions. She spent the rest of the time jumping with the pouncing lion and waving and laughing. Uncle Chris even rode his bike from work to his lunch break to take part in the fun.

Our last stop on the Trip O' Fun was to the Academy Library where she kept busy running around and climbing on the Clara-sized chairs. She did condescend to pose for my camera, for which I'm grateful.

Good times, friends. Good times.

Happy Days

One of the worst things about the temporary separation in our family is that we have missed spending two very special days together: Father's Day and of course--the most special day of all--my birthday: the big 2-8. But from what I hear Jeremy was well taken care of on Father's Day, for which I am grateful, and I certainly have been well taken care of on this most special of days. My mom treated me to a fantastic lunch at Sundance, and then to a ridiculous piece of chocolate/strawberry/cream cake at a little Italian restaurant in downtown Provo. My sister watched Clara for me, Jeremy's parents invited me to a fun birthday fete last night, my brother made two special trips just to say Happy Birthday, and my nieces and nephews have treated me to various renditions of "Happy Birthday" since this morning. Great times.

So thank you to everyone for taking such prodigious care of my family and me. And don't feel too bad for us: at least we'll be together for Jeremy's birthday!

I like it when we eat new things

Nothing says "Welcome, summer" like a girl's first-ever popsicle. She surely enjoyed the treat, and when the last bit fell off the stick she spent several minutes working to put the stick back through the popsicle. I will admit that the whole event turned into quite a sticky situation, but her glee was worth the mess.

One hundred and six days

So I added the ticker you see to your right so I could watch in living color the countdown to our baby boy's arrival. One hundred and six days seems like a long time, which is kind of funny since every day I worry that he will come early like his sister. Not worth it. My OB is planning my third glorious c-section for somewhere around September 12, so I think I'll just hope to make it until then. That's only, like, 99 days. Right around the corner.

In the meantime, I'm most looking forward to a great reunion with Jeremy in only 27 days. And we are both looking forward to moving into the world's greatest rental. Please enjoy, as we do, this view of the house and this view from the house. Ah, Coeur d'Alene. So far, north Idaho has been very good to us. Now, if only we could actually live there. Just a few more weeks!

I can drive two thousand miles

For those who might still be unaware, we have moved/are moving from lovely Central New York to lovely north Idaho. Jeremy will be doing his dissertation research in the region, so we'll be living there for the next two years. We had not anticipated moving the family in shifts, but with my higher risk for preterm delivery I needed to get established with my new OB in Idaho as soon as possible. Clara and I have been gone from Syracuse for two weeks, and Jeremy will join us when he finishes teaching his summer course at SU--a riveting six weeks on "America and the Global Environment."

Anyway, Clara and I are currently enjoying the comforts of home at my parents' house after an extremely long trip across these United States and a few stressful days in Coeur d'Alene visiting the doctor and looking for a place to live. But now Clara and I have a place to go back to later in the month, and we will be pleased as punch when Jeremy joins us!

My mom mercifully joined us for our long drive across the country. I don't know whether anyone was monitoring weather in the midwest a week and a half ago, but we managed to be driving across Nebraska during a horrific storm. We even ended up driving through standing water in a little town where we'd stopped for lunch. I wish I'd taken a picture, but we more or less looked like this:

All right, there's a chance I'm exaggerating, but the whole day was totally unnerving, and it took us nearly 14 hours to travel what should've taken us about 10. Miserable. The next day was equally rainy, but on our last day of travel between Montana and Idaho the sun came out and lit upon the splendor that is Coeur d'Alene, and I took it as a sign of good things to come. I don't think my mom has many pleasant memories of our road trip. When I said, "Well, I guess I can never ask you to drive across the country with me again," she just said, "That's not true. You could ask..." Mmm-hmmm. Oh well. Clara was amazingly well behaved, although I think she was more or less broken by the time we finally arrived. She didn't even seem to have the will to fuss; she just sat in her carseat and slept or stared out the window. Sad.

At any rate, we are all surviving, we are grateful for our blessings, and we cannot wait to be reunited in a few weeks! In the meantime, enjoy some pictures of the happier moments on the roadtrip of infamy:

Clara enjoying a stretch break in Kirtland, Ohio.

Throwing "yocks" (rocks) into the water. This girl loves her yocks.

At a rest stop somewhere.

A break at the BK, also somewhere along the route between New York and Idaho.

Enjoying Memorial Day in Coeur d'Alene.

Enjoying some grandpa time. Clara may possibly love "gampa" more than she loves me. Only time will tell...
